The main difference between ordinary finned tubes and corrugated finned tubes is that the latter type has spiral or transverse fins that have been made by rolling them into the base tube wall instead of attaching them with an external mechanism. This means that more thermal surface is available because of the turbulent flow of the fluid inside the tube, which increases heat transfer properties as well as allows minimizing fouling of the system. These tubes are made of carbon and alloy steels, as well as of Stainless Steel (304 for applications in a standard environment and 316 for applications in high-chloride seawater conditions), copper, and cupro-nickel, and have yield strengths of 205-450 MPa and can withstand temperatures up to 450 degrees Celsius. They are produced from materials that can handle up to 20 MPa of pressure and are usually operated at less than 6.4 MPa, and are applied for HVAC chillers, oil refining, distilleries, wastewater treatment, and food processing stations. What Is a Corrugated Finned Tube?

The word 'corrugated' gets used loosely across the fin tube industry, and it genuinely means different things depending on which supplier you are talking to, so it is worth being clear about what this page covers before going any further. A corrugated finned tube, as covered here, has helical ridges and channels rolled directly into the tube wall itself during manufacture. The tube is sometimes finished with a separate outer fin on top of that corrugated surface and sometimes supplied with the corrugated wall alone doing the work.

That is different from two other constructions that also get called 'corrugated' in casual conversation. Where a fin strip is wound onto a plain tube, and the foot of that strip is crimped or corrugated as it winds on, that is crimped fin construction, and our crimped finned tubes page covers that specifically. How does tube wall corrugation improve heat transfer?
