What Is Stainless Steel 316 Pipe?

Stainless steel 316 pipe is an austenitic, molybdenum bearing stainless steel pipe manufactured to ASTM A312 and ASME SA312 TP316. What separates it from the standard austenitic grades is the deliberate addition of 2 to 3 percent molybdenum. Molybdenum raises the alloy's resistance to electrochemical attack, specifically the pitting and crevice corrosion initiated by chloride ions, which is why 316 is the default specification for marine piping, offshore platforms, chemical process lines, pharmaceutical fluid systems and food and beverage installations where 304 stainless steel pipe provides insufficient protection.

The same alloy is specified internationally under several equivalent designations: UNS S31600, Werkstoff 1.4401, JIS SUS 316 and the Euronorm name X5CrNiMo17-12-2. All describe identical chemistry and the same underlying ASTM A312 TP316 product. Our article on what stainless steel 316 is, its uses, grades and composition covers the metallurgy in more depth.

SS 316 vs 304 vs 316 vs 316H vs 316Ti: Which Grade Do You Need?

Grade

Key difference

Best for

SS 316

Standard molybdenum bearing austenitic grade, carbon up to 0.08 percent

General marine, chemical and pharmaceutical piping

SS 304

No molybdenum, lower chloride resistance, lower cost

Non marine and general industrial service

SS 316

Low carbon at 0.03 percent maximum, superior weldability, no carbide precipitation

Welded assemblies, sanitary and pharmaceutical lines

SS 316H

Higher carbon at 0.04 to 0.10 percent, better creep strength

High temperature service above 500 C

SS 316Ti

Titanium stabilised, resists carbide precipitation at temperature

High temperature welded fabrications

For welded fabrications, 316 is generally preferred over 316. The lower carbon content of 0.03 percent maximum against 0.08 percent eliminates carbide precipitation, or sensitisation, in the heat affected zone, preserving intergranular corrosion resistance without a post weld anneal. For a side by side comparison of the two most commonly confused grades, see 304 vs 316 stainless steel.

Corrosion Resistance, PREN and Critical Pitting Temperature

SS 316 has a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number of approximately 24 to 26, calculated as percent Cr plus 3.3 times percent Mo plus 16 times percent N. That exceeds Grade 304 at roughly 18 to 20, which is the quantitative basis for specifying 316 in chloride service. Critical Pitting Temperature for 316 in 1 molar sodium chloride typically exceeds 15 C, against below 0 C for 304.

Where chloride concentration, temperature or stress corrosion cracking risk exceeds what 316 can handle, step up to 2205 duplex, 2507 super duplex or 904L super austenitic. Our comparison of 316 and 904L sets out where the crossover point falls.

Manufacturing Process of SS 316 Pipes

Seamless to ASTM A312 and ASME SA312

Produced by hot extrusion or rotary piercing from solid billet, followed by cold drawing and solution annealing at 1010 to 1120 C. With no seam weld and uniform wall thickness, seamless 316 pipe is the choice for high pressure and high cycle fatigue service.

ERW to ASTM A312 and ASME SA312

Strip is roll formed into a tube and seam welded by electric resistance, then the weld seam is heat treated so its corrosion resistance matches the parent metal. ERW 316 pipe is the standard for general process piping and HVAC at lower cost than seamless.

EFW to ASTM A358 and ASME SA358

Electric fusion welded from plate or strip, this is the standard route for large diameter fabricated pipe from 6 inch to 100 inch in chemical plant and desalination applications. See our ASTM A358 and ASME B36.19M pipe range.

LSAW

Longitudinally submerged arc welded, used for heavy wall structural and high pressure large diameter applications where EFW is insufficient. All welded 316 pipe and tube is solution annealed and pickled before despatch.

Choosing between the two routes is covered in our guide to the difference between seamless and welded pipe.

Dual Certified 316 / 316 Pipe

Dual certified 316 and 316 pipe complies with both UNS S31600 and UNS S31603 simultaneously, meeting the 0.03 percent maximum carbon limit of 316 while retaining the minimum nickel content required for 316. That allows one heat to be used in both welded and unwelded service, which simplifies inventory on large fabrication packages. Amardeep supplies dual certified pipe on request, so confirm the requirement on your purchase order.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stainless Steel 316 Pipes & Tubes

What is stainless steel 316 pipe?

Stainless steel 316 pipe is an austenitic pipe made to ASTM A312 and ASME SA312 TP316, containing 16 to 18 percent chromium, 10 to 14 percent nickel and 2 to 3 percent molybdenum. The molybdenum gives it superior resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion compared with Grade 304.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel pipe?

316 contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum and 304 contains none. That raises the PREN of 316 to roughly 24 to 26 against 18 to 20 for 304, which translates to far better performance in seawater, chloride bearing chemicals and coastal atmospheres. 304 remains more economical for general industrial service.

What is the difference between SS 316 and SS 316 pipe?

The difference is carbon content. 316 permits up to 0.08 percent carbon while 316 is capped at 0.03 percent. The lower carbon in 316 prevents carbide precipitation in the weld heat affected zone, so it is specified for welded assemblies that cannot be annealed after fabrication.

Is 316 stainless steel pipe magnetic?

In the solution annealed condition 316 is austenitic and essentially non magnetic. Cold working such as bending, swaging or heavy machining can induce a small amount of martensite and produce slight magnetic response, which is normal and does not indicate the wrong grade.

Is SS 316 pipe suitable for marine and seawater applications?

Yes for most marine service, including splash zone piping, boat fittings and coastal structures. For continuous immersion in warm, stagnant or high chloride seawater, 2205 duplex, 2507 super duplex or 904L offer greater margin against pitting and crevice attack.

What is the maximum service temperature for SS 316 pipe?

Around 925 C in continuous service and 870 C in intermittent service for oxidation resistance. For sustained duty above 500 C where creep strength governs, 316H is the correct specification because of its higher carbon content.

What schedules are available for 316 stainless steel pipe?

Schedules from SCH 5S and 10S through 40S, STD, 80S, XS, 120, 160 and XXS, depending on nominal pipe size. SCH 10S and 40S cover most process piping, while 160 and XXS are reserved for high pressure service.

What is the difference between seamless and welded 316 pipe?

Seamless pipe is extruded or drawn from solid billet with no weld seam, giving uniform wall thickness and higher pressure capability. Welded pipe is formed from strip and seam welded, then heat treated, and is more economical at larger diameters and in non critical service.

What is the price of SS 316 pipe per kg?

Indicative pricing runs from around 260 to 360 rupees per kg depending on seamless or welded construction, schedule and quantity, and moves with nickel and molybdenum surcharges. Send your size, schedule and tonnage for a firm current quotation.

What is 316 stainless steel tubing used for?

316 tubing is used where dimensional precision matters more than bore size, including instrumentation and impulse lines, hydraulic circuits, heat exchanger and condenser bundles, sanitary process lines and structural or architectural tube.

What sizes are available for 316 SS tube?

From 1/16 inch outside diameter instrumentation tube with 0.010 inch wall up to 2 1/2 inch hydraulic and structural tube with 0.250 inch wall, to ASTM A269 and ASTM A213. Pipe sizes run separately from 1/8 inch NB to 30 inch NB.

How do I get a test certificate for SS 316 pipe from Amardeep Steel?

Every despatch includes an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 Mill Test Certificate and IBR Form III-D as standard. Request 3.2 certification or third party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, TUV or Lloyd's at the time of order and we will arrange it before despatch.
