Crimped Finned Tubes

Crimped Finned Tubes Manufacturer and Supplier

Amardeep Steel Centre LLP supplies crimped finned tubes for radiators, air heaters and industrial dryers. Our crimped finned tubes use a metal strip mechanically wound and crimped onto the base tube under tension, giving a cost effective finned surface without welding. Tell us your base tube material and duty and we will confirm the right crimped finned tube specification.

What Are Crimped Finned Tubes?

Crimped finned tubes, also called spiral crimped fin tubes or tension wound fin tubes, are made by winding a metal strip around the base tube under tension and crimping the fin foot for a wider contact area. Unlike H type or welded fin construction, no welding or embedding is involved, which keeps crimped finned tubes among the most cost effective fin options available.

This page covers the mechanical crimped construction. For the wrapped L type and LL type fin used on copper and copper alloy base tubes, see our Copper Finned Tubes page.

How Crimped Finned Tubes Are Made

The fin strip is first pre formed on a set of performing rollers to widen the base of the fin, then wound onto the base tube under controlled tension. The crimping action increases both the contact area between fin and tube and the turbulence in the airflow passing over the finished crimped finned tube, improving heat transfer.

Materials Available for Crimped Finned Tubes

Crimped finned tubes are available with carbon steel, copper or aluminium fin strip on carbon steel, copper or stainless steel base tubes, so the fin and base tube material can be matched to the process fluid and the ambient environment.

Crimped Finned Tubes FAQs

Q. What is a crimped finned tube?

A crimped finned tube is made by winding a metal strip under tension around the base tube, with the fin foot pre formed to widen the contact area. The fin is crimped and mechanically locked onto the tube surface rather than welded or embedded.

Q. What is the temperature limit for crimped finned tubes?

Crimped finned tubes are generally limited to lower temperature service, typically up to around 120°C, because the mechanical fin attachment can loosen at higher temperatures from differential thermal expansion. Higher temperature duty should use L type, embedded or welded fin construction instead.

Q. What is the difference between crimped and L type finned tubes?

Both are mechanically formed rather than welded. Crimped or tension wound fin uses a pre formed strip crimped directly onto the base tube for a wider contact area, while L type fin wraps the strip with an L shaped foot that partially covers the base tube and generally tolerates a somewhat higher service temperature.

Q. Where are crimped finned tubes used?

Common applications include air heaters, industrial dryers, radiators and low temperature process or oil cooling, anywhere a cost effective finned surface is needed within a moderate temperature range.
