What Are Industrial Fasteners? Bolts, Nuts, Studs & Washers Explained
- Bolts: externally threaded fasteners used with a nut to clamp two components together through a clearance hole; the head is typically hex, socket or carriage style.
- Studs: fully or partially threaded rods with no head, screwed into a tapped hole on one end with a nut fitted on the other; common on flanged joints, pressure vessels and equipment where one side of the joint isn't accessible for a bolt head.
- Nuts: internally threaded fasteners tightened onto a bolt or stud to complete the clamped joint; available in hex, heavy hex, 2H and other forms matched to the mating bolt/stud grade.
- Washers: flat or spring discs placed under a nut or bolt head to spread clamping load, protect the joint surface, and (for spring washers) resist loosening under vibration.
- HSFG Bolts: High Strength Friction Grip bolt assemblies (bolt, nut and washer) tightened to a specified torque so the connected plates transfer load by friction rather than shear; used in structural steel and bridge connections.
Understanding Fastener Property Classes & Grades
Bolt and stud strength is specified either as a metric Property Class (ISO 898-1 / DIN) or as an ASTM material grade the two systems are often confused, so here's how to read them:
- Metric Property Class (e.g. 4.6, 5.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9): the first digit x100 gives the approximate minimum tensile strength in MPa, and multiplying both digits together x10 gives the approximate minimum yield strength in MPa. Class 8.8, for example, has roughly 800 MPa tensile and 640 MPa yield strength.
- ASTM A193 (studs/bolts for high-temperature service): Grade B7 is the standard chrome-moly high-strength grade; B7M is a lower-hardness version of the same alloy for sour (H2S) service under NACE MR0175; B16 adds vanadium for elevated-temperature creep resistance; L7/L7M are low-temperature equivalents of B7/B7M; B8/B8M are austenitic stainless steel (304/316) grades.
- ASTM A194 (nuts to match A193 studs): Grade 2H is the standard heavy hex nut for B7 studs; 2HM and 7M are the sour-service (NACE) equivalents; Grade 4, 7 and 8 cover other alloy and stainless combinations.
- ASTM A320 (low-temperature service): covers grades such as L7, L7M and L43 for bolting used below -29C, where standard A193 grades can lose toughness.
- HSFG Property Classes: 8.8 (marked 8S) and 10.9 (marked 10S) are the two standard classes for friction-grip structural bolting to IS 3757/ISO 7412.
Fasteners Manufacturing Process in India

- Hot Forged: raw material is cut, heated and forged into shape before machining and thread rolling. Preferred for larger diameters and higher-strength applications: forging aligns the material's grain flow with the fastener's shape, giving better fatigue and shock resistance.
- Cold Formed: the fastener is formed from wire or bar at room temperature by cold heading and thread rolling. Faster and more economical for standard sizes and volumes, with a smoother surface finish, though generally limited to lower-hardness grades than hot forging.
Typical process flow: raw material cutting and inspection, forging or cold heading, annealing/heat treatment (quenching & tempering for high-strength grades), thread rolling, surface finishing/coating, and final inspection and marking before packaging.
