Our Ring Type Joint Flanges are available in sizes from 1/8" to 84" NB, in pressure classes 150# through 2500#, and in a wide range of materials from Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel to exotic Nickel Alloys, Duplex Steel, Inconel, Hastelloy, and Monel.

What Are Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flanges?

A Ring Type Joint Flange is a precision-machined flange featuring a deep groove cut into its face. A metallic ring gasket with an oval or octagonal cross-section is seated in this groove. As connecting bolts are tightened, the ring undergoes plastic deformation creating intimate metal-to-metal contact resulting in a leak-proof, pressure-energised seal. The seal actually improves as internal pressure increases, making RTJ Flanges the preferred choice for severe service conditions.

There are different faces for a flange. These faces have the preliminary use as contact surfaces. Usually, the sealing gasket sits on this face and thus seals the connection. The Flat Faced Ring Type Joint Flanges have a flat face that is not raised. The RTJ flange dimensions vary according to standards and needs. We have a detailed RTJ flange weight chart for our clients to make the selection easy. The standards for RTJ Flanges make them fit under 24 inches. Ring Type Joint Weld Flange has a groove in the ring so that the gasket often squeezes into the groove. Ring Type Joint Raised Face Flanges have a raised face for extra grip and easy handling as well as strength. ANSI B16.5 Class 150 Ring Type Joint Flanges are one of the low pressure class flanges. Stainless Steel Ring Type Joint Flanges can also come in other dimensions.

What are B16.5 Ring Type Joint Flanges?

B16.5 Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flanges are used in high pressure and high temperature applications. They have a specially designed groove on their face that accommodates a metal ring gasket, which provides a secure & leak-free seal.

Per ASME B16.5, the groove sidewall angle is 23° and the surface finish must not exceed 1.6 µm Ra to ensure reliable metal-to-metal sealing. Key groove tolerances: Depth E (+0.40 mm / -0.00 mm), Width F (±0.20 mm), Pitch Diameter P (±0.013 mm).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flange?

A Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flange is a pipe flange with a deep groove machined into its face. A metallic ring gasket with oval or octagonal cross-section seats in this groove. When bolts are tightened, the ring undergoes plastic deformation creating a metal-to-metal seal - making it ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature pipelines.

What are RTJ Flange Dimensions per ASME B16.5?

ASME B16.5 RTJ Flange Dimensions cover NPS 1/2" to 24" across pressure classes 150# to 2500#. Key dimension parameters include Pitch Diameter (P), Groove Width (F), Groove Depth (E), Raised Face Diameter (K), and Ring Number. Groove numbers range from R11 to R79 corresponding to ASME B16.20 metallic ring gaskets.

What pressure classes are available for RTJ Flanges?

RTJ Flanges are manufactured in pressure classes 150#, 300#, 400#, 600#, 900#, 1500#, and 2500# per ASME B16.5. At -29°C to 38°C, Class 150 is rated 19.8 MPa while Class 2500 is rated 431 MPa.

What materials are used for Ring Type Joint Flanges?

RTJ Flanges are manufactured in Stainless Steel (304, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 904L), Carbon Steel (ASTM A105, A350), Alloy Steel (F11, F22, F91), Duplex & Super Duplex Steel (F51, F53), Nickel Alloys (Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy), and Copper-Nickel alloys.

What is the difference between RTJ and Raised Face (RF) flanges?

An RF flange uses a flat raised seating surface with a soft or spiral-wound gasket. An RTJ flange uses a precision-machined groove that holds a metallic ring gasket, providing superior sealing under extreme pressure, temperature, and cyclic loads. RTJ is the preferred choice for severe service conditions including oil & gas wellheads and high-pressure process piping.

What industries use RTJ Flanges?

RTJ Flanges are widely used in Oil & Gas pipelines and refineries, Petrochemical & Chemical processing plants, Power generation, Offshore platforms, Hydraulic systems, and Paper & Pulp industries - wherever high-pressure and leak-free performance is critical.

What is the surface finish requirement for RTJ Flange grooves?

Per ASME B16.5, the sidewall surface finish of the RTJ groove shall not exceed 1.6 µm Ra roughness. This precision finish ensures proper plastic deformation of the metallic ring gasket and a reliable metal-to-metal seal.
