What are Monel Flanges?

Monel flanges are high-performance nickel-copper alloy components known for their excellent corrosion resistance and ability to withstand high temperatures. These flanges are primarily used to connect pipes, valves, and other equipment in piping systems, ensuring secure and leak-proof joints.

Manufactured from alloys such as Monel 400 and Monel K500, these flanges offer good ductility, strength, and durability even in harsh environments. Due to their resistance to seawater, chemicals, and extreme conditions, Monel flanges are widely used in heavy-duty industrial applications.

They are suitable for industries that require reliable performance, including marine, chemical processing, and oil & gas sectors, where long service life and corrosion resistance are critical.

Monel Flange Face Types Available

Face Type

Code

When to Use

Flat Face

FF

Full-bore contact across the entire face. Use with cast iron or bronze equipment to avoid damage from raised face contact.

Raised Face

RF

Most common face type. Concentrates the bolt load on a smaller gasket area, improving sealing efficiency. Standard for ANSI B16.5 Class 150 to 2500.

Ring Type Joint

RTJ

Metal-to-metal seal using a soft metallic ring gasket. Specified for Class 600 and above, high-pressure and high-temperature service.

Monel 400 vs Monel K500 Flanges: Which Grade to Choose?

Criteria

Monel 400 (UNS N04400)

Monel K500 (UNS N05500)

Strength

Moderate (550 MPa tensile)

High (896 MPa tensile, approx 3x Monel 400 yield strength)

Hardening

Solid-solution strengthened. Can be cold-worked.

Precipitation-hardened (age-hardenable). Requires post-weld age-hardening treatment.

Corrosion Resistance

Excellent in seawater, acids, alkalis and HF acid service.

Same corrosion resistance as Monel 400 with significantly higher strength.

Magnetic Properties

Weakly magnetic when cold-worked

Non-magnetic. Suitable for degaussing equipment and sensitive instrumentation.

Typical Applications

Seawater piping, chemical process piping, HF alkylation units, heat exchangers, marine hardware.

Offshore propeller shafts, pump impellers, oil drilling tools, turbine blades, high-stress marine fittings.

Relative Cost

Lower cost. Most economical choice for general corrosive service.

Higher cost. Justified where both high mechanical load and corrosion resistance are required simultaneously.

Rule of thumb: Use Monel 400 for static, corrosive piping service. Specify Monel K500 when mechanical loads, fatigue, or erosion are also factors.

Applications of Monel Flanges

Monel 400 and K500 flanges are specified in environments where standard stainless steel fails due to corrosion, stress, or extreme temperature.

Packaging and Delivery

Monel Flanges are packed in wooden boxes, crates, or on pallets with protective wrapping to prevent surface damage and corrosion during transit. Each flange is individually protected with plastic end caps and rust-inhibitor paper. Export packing complies with ISPM 15 phytosanitary regulations for wooden packaging material. Timely delivery and secure logistics are maintained for both domestic and international shipments.

Frequently Asked Questions about Monel Flanges

What is the maximum temperature for Monel 400 Flanges?

Monel 400 flanges maintain full mechanical integrity up to 550 degrees C (1022 degrees F). Above this temperature rapid oxidation occurs and the material is not recommended for prolonged service. For temperatures above 480 degrees C, consult your engineering team regarding the specific process conditions and cyclic loading requirements.

Can Monel Flanges be used with hydrofluoric acid?

Yes. Monel 400 is one of the few alloys that resists hydrofluoric acid across all concentrations and temperatures in de-aerated conditions. It is the standard material for HF alkylation unit flanges. Note: Monel 400 is not recommended for use in aerated hydrofluoric acid solutions or in the presence of nitric acid and ammonia, which rapidly attack the alloy due to its copper chemistry.

What is the difference between ASTM B564 and ASME SB564?

Both are technically identical specifications. ASTM B564 is issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials. ASME SB564 is the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code adoption of the same standard. Both cover nickel alloy forgings including Monel 400 (UNS N04400) and Monel K500 (UNS N05500). Either designation may be specified and will be met by the same material.

Do you supply Mill Test Certificates for Monel Flanges?

Yes. All Amardeep Steel Monel Flanges are supplied with EN10204 Type 3.1 Mill Test Certificates as standard. These certificates confirm chemical composition and mechanical properties and are issued by the manufacturer. Type 3.2 third-party witnessed certification is available on request for projects requiring independent verification.

What is the lead time for Monel Flanges?

Standard sizes in Class 150 to 600 are generally available ex-stock in Mumbai. Non-standard sizes and Class 900 to 2500 carry a typical production lead time of 2 to 4 weeks. Lead times vary by size and quantity. Contact our sales team for a definitive lead time for your specific requirement.

What is the difference between a Monel Slip-On Flange and a Monel Weld Neck Flange?

A Slip-On Flange slides over the pipe end and is fillet-welded inside and outside. It is easier and quicker to install and is cost-effective for low-to-moderate pressure service. A Weld Neck Flange has an integral tapered hub that is butt-welded to the pipe. This design provides superior stress distribution, higher fatigue resistance, and is the preferred choice for high-pressure, high-temperature, and cyclic service applications.
