CuZn40 low lead brass pipes are the 60/40 brass that European and Indian drawings call by its EN name. It is Muntz metal, about 60 per cent copper and 40 per cent zinc, with lead held to a low limit, and CW509L is its grade code. Low lead is not lead free, and that difference is worth settling before you order.

Where CuZn40 Pipe Is Used
- Architectural and decorative tube: Rails, fittings and trim where the colour of yellow brass is part of the look.
- Heat exchanger and condenser tube: Tube for cooling water that has been checked, not for seawater.
- Valve parts: Stems and sleeves cut from tube and finished by machining.
- Hot pressed and forged parts: Components pressed or forged hot from tube and then finished.
- Hardware: General engineering hardware that needs strength and a good surface.

What are CuZn40 low lead brass pipes?
CuZn40 is the European name for 60/40 brass, also called Muntz metal, with about 60 per cent copper, 40 zinc and a low lead limit. The EN grade code is CW509L. It is supplied as pipe and tube for architectural work, heat exchangers and hot formed or machined parts.
Is CuZn40 the same as C28000?
Close, but not identical. C28000 is the US designation for 60/40 Muntz metal and CuZn40 is the European one. The copper and lead limits differ between ASTM B135 and EN 12449, so check which standard your drawing names. We quote to the standard on your order and tell you where the two differ.
Is CuZn40 lead free?
No. CuZn40 is low lead, not lead free. EN 12449 limits lead to 0.2 per cent maximum and ASTM B135 limits C28000 to 0.30. Lead rules for drinking water depend on your region and the finished part, and CuZn40 can dezincify. For those jobs ask us for a lead free brass.
What is the difference between CuZn40 and CuZn37?
CuZn37 has about 63 per cent copper and cold forms better. CuZn40 has about 60 per cent copper and a two phase structure, so it is stronger and hot forms better. Choose CuZn40 to hot press or forge, and CuZn37 to draw and bend cold. Tell us the forming steps and we advise.
Is CuZn40 suitable for seawater?
We do not recommend it, whatever some supplier pages say about saline solutions. CuZn40 has no tin inhibitor and a two phase structure, so it can lose zinc in seawater and many aggressive waters. For marine or condenser duty ask for naval brass, admiralty brass, aluminium brass or copper nickel.
Which standards cover CuZn40 pipe and tube?
EN 12449 covers seamless round tube for general purposes, and CW509L is the CuZn40 grade. The US match is C28000 under ASTM B135. Name the standard, temper and tolerance on your order so tests match your drawing.
