Frequently Asked Questions - Stainless Steel Thin Wall Tubes
What counts as a thin-wall stainless steel tube?
In general, a tube qualifies as thin-wall if the ratio of outer diameter to wall thickness is equal to or greater than 20:1 and the wall is less than 1.65 mm (0.065"). The purpose of these tubes is to reduce overall weight and increase in flow volume without compromising on structure.
Can you bend thin-wall tubing without crushing it?
Yes, since thin-walled tubing is quite light considering the diameter, you would need a mandrel or support dies to bend such tubing without crushing it. The best thing you can do is use tubing that is soft and annealed and has elongation properties are 35% or more; this ensures that the tube doesn't flatten or crease during the bending process.
How is thin-wall tubing different from capillary tubing?
This depends entirely on the scale of the tubing. Capillary tubing is micro bore tube, generally smaller than 3 mm (1/8") OD, that serves the purpose of metering and sensing pressure. In thin-walled tubing, the purpose of the tubing is reducing the wall thickness as compared to the outer diameter; these tubes vary in size up to 4" OD.
Is it safe to weld thin-wall stainless steel tubes on site?
Yes, since low-carbon grades such as 304L and 316L handle TIG or orbital welding quite well without causing carbide precipitation. You simply have to control your welding current properly.
