
Stainless steel 321 flanges are titanium-stabilized austenitic flanges, fabricated to ASTM A182 F321 standards, and are used in high-temperature welded assemblies where intergranular corrosion is a major issue. The titanium in UNS S32100, unlike standard SS 304 flanges, serves as a stabilizer of the carbide, and thus the chromium carbide is not formed at the weld areas; no post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is necessary. At very high temperatures, above 538 °C (1000 °F), SS 321H flanges (UNS S32109) have better rupture strength due to creep, and so are used in aerospace exhaust stacks, heat exchangers and power generation systems.
