Specifying 6061: Temper Is the Decision That Matters

With the alloy settled, temper carries almost all the remaining risk on a 6061 order. The same alloy varies by a factor of nearly three between annealed and T6, and the material looks identical in every condition.

6061 pricing tracks the LME aluminium price plus a conversion premium varying with temper, section, wall and quantity. T6 and T651 carry a heat treatment premium over T4. Drawing a seamless tube to B210 costs more than an extruded tube to B221 because of the additional drawing and tolerance control.

Ex stock Mumbai across the common sizes in T6, with T4, T651 and non-standard sections manufactured to order in two to four weeks. Every consignment ships with an EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate covering composition by spectrometry, tensile and yield strength, elongation and hardness in the supplied temper, plus dimensional inspection. Eddy current and ultrasonic testing on drawn seamless tube, third-party inspection on request. Exports FOB, CIF and EXW worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions - Aluminium 6061 Pipes & Tubes

What is aluminium 6061 pipe?

Aluminium 6061 pipe is a heat-treatable magnesium-silicon alloy pipe under UNS A96061, containing 0.15 to 0.40 percent copper for added strength and machinability. In the T6 temper it develops around 310 MPa tensile strength, making it the standard choice for structural, pressure and machined applications.

What is the difference between 6061 and 6063 aluminium?

Copper content. 6061 contains 0.15 to 0.40 percent copper, 6063 caps it at 0.10 percent. That gives 6061 roughly 45 percent higher strength and better machinability, while 6063 extrudes into finer profiles and anodises to a more uniform finish. Specify 6061 for load, 6063 for appearance.

What is the difference between 6061-T6 and 6061-T651?

Mechanically they are identical at 310 MPa tensile and 276 MPa yield. T651 has been stretched after quenching to relieve residual stress. Specify T651 for anything extensively machined, because T6 material can distort as internal stress is released during cutting.

Can 6061 aluminium be welded?

Yes, readily by TIG and MIG using 4043 or 5356 filler. However, welding locally anneals the heat affected zone and reduces strength there to roughly T4 levels. Either design the joint for the lower figure or re-solution treat and age the assembly to restore full T6 properties.

What is the tensile strength of 6061-T6?

Approximately 310 MPa minimum tensile with 276 MPa yield and 12 to 17 percent elongation, at a Brinell hardness of around 95. In T4 the same alloy gives 241 MPa tensile, and annealed O temper gives 124 MPa maximum.

Is 6061 aluminium good for marine use?

It performs well in marine atmospheres and is widely used for fittings, masts and railings. For welded hull structure and continuous saltwater immersion, the magnesium alloys 5083 and 5086 offer better resistance, because 6061 contains copper which slightly reduces corrosion performance.

Is 6061 aluminium machinable?

Yes, it is the most machinable of the common 6xxx alloys because of its copper content, producing clean chips rather than gummy swarf. Specify T651 rather than T6 for heavily machined components, as the stress-relieved condition holds dimensional stability as material is removed.

Which standards cover 6061 pipe and tube?

ASTM B241 for seamless pipe and extruded tube, ASTM B210 for drawn seamless tube, ASTM B221 for extruded profiles, ASTM B429 for structural pipe and tube, and ASTM B234 for heat exchanger tube. European supply follows EN 755, Indian supply IS 1285.

What sizes are available in 6061 pipe and tube?

Pipe from 1/2 inch to 12 inch nominal bore in schedules 5, 10, 40 and 80, and tube from 6 mm to 630 mm outside diameter with walls from 0.5 mm to 30 mm. Square sections run to 300 x 300 mm and rectangular to 100 x 200 mm.

What is the density of 6061 aluminium?

2,700 kg per cubic metre, roughly one third that of steel. A 4 inch SCH 40 pipe in 6061 weighs about 5.53 kg per metre against 16.07 kg per metre for the same size in carbon steel, a saving of 66 percent.
