Specifying 6061: Temper Is the Decision That Matters
With the alloy settled, temper carries almost all the remaining risk on a 6061 order. The same alloy varies by a factor of nearly three between annealed and T6, and the material looks identical in every condition.

T6 or T651 for structural and machined work
- Both give 310 MPa tensile strength and 276 MPa yield strength.
- T651 has additionally been stretched after quenching to relieve residual stress.
- Specify T651 for heavily machined components because T6 can distort as stress is released during cutting.

T4 where forming follows
- 241 MPa tensile strength and 145 MPa yield strength, with substantially greater ductility.
- Specify T4 when the section will be bent or formed after delivery and then aged, or where extra ductility is more important than maximum strength.

O only where deep forming is required
- Maximum tensile strength of 124 MPa.
- Rarely ordered in tube form, but relevant where severe forming is followed by heat treatment.
- Ordering O temper instead of T6 is one of the most costly temper selection mistakes for Aluminium 6061.

Welding, Machining and Anodising 6061
- Welding. TIG and MIG with 4043 or 5356 filler. 4043 gives better crack resistance and a duller weld; 5356 gives higher strength and matches better after anodising. Welding locally anneals the heat affected zone, dropping strength there to roughly T4 levels. Design the joint accordingly or re-solution treat and age the assembly.
- Machining. The copper content makes 6061 the most machinable of the common 6xxx alloys, producing clean chips rather than the gummy swarf typical of 6063. Specify T651 rather than T6 for heavily machined parts, because the stress-relieved condition holds dimension as material is removed.
- Anodising. 6061 takes clear and hard-coat anodising well. Copper can produce slight colour variation across a batch, which is why 6063 is preferred for consistent decorative finish across a facade. For functional hard anodising, 6061 is the better substrate because of its higher base hardness.

What is aluminium 6061 pipe?
Aluminium 6061 pipe is a heat-treatable magnesium-silicon alloy pipe under UNS A96061, containing 0.15 to 0.40 percent copper for added strength and machinability. In the T6 temper it develops around 310 MPa tensile strength, making it the standard choice for structural, pressure and machined applications.
What is the difference between 6061 and 6063 aluminium?
Copper content. 6061 contains 0.15 to 0.40 percent copper, 6063 caps it at 0.10 percent. That gives 6061 roughly 45 percent higher strength and better machinability, while 6063 extrudes into finer profiles and anodises to a more uniform finish. Specify 6061 for load, 6063 for appearance.
