What is Copper Nickel 70/30?

Copper Nickel 70/30 Pipes & Tubes

Copper Nickel 70/30 (also known as Cupro Nickel 70/30, CuNi 70/30, Alloy 715, or Cunifer 70/30) is a copper-based alloy containing approximately 30% nickel, along with carefully controlled additions of iron and manganese. It is designated as UNS C71500 under American standards and WNR 2.0882 under European (DIN) classification.

This alloy has an enhanced corrosion resistance (especially in marine and seawater), high tensile strength, high formability and weldability, and high biofouling resistance. Iron and manganese additions further augment the erosion-corrosion resistant properties, thus Cu-Ni 70/30 is more appropriate than Copper Nickel 90/10 in high velocity and aggressive saline water environments.

Amardeep Steel Centre stocks and supplies Cu-Ni 70/30 Plates, Sheets, Strips, Coils, and Foils to meet the most demanding industrial and marine specifications from standard ASTM B171 plates to custom-cut tubesheets and precision slit coils.

Frequently Asked Questions About Copper Nickel 70/30 Plates

What is Copper Nickel 70/30 (UNS C71500)?

Copper Nickel 70/30 (UNS C71500) is a copper-based alloy containing approximately 30% nickel, along with small additions of iron and manganese. Also known as Cupro Nickel 70/30, Alloy 715, or Cunifer 70/30, it offers excellent corrosion resistance — especially in marine and seawater environments — combined with moderate to high tensile strength and good formability.

What standards apply to Cu-Ni 70/30 Plates and Sheets?

The primary standards are ASTM B171 / ASME SB171 for plates and ASTM B122 / ASME SB122 for sheets and strips. The UNS designation is C71500, and the European Werkstoff number is WNR 2.0882. Equivalent specifications include MIL-C-15726, DIN 2.0882, BS CN102, EN CW352H, NES 780, and SAE J461/J463.

What is the difference between Cu-Ni 70/30 Sheet, Plate, and Coil?

Thickness less than 0.15 mm is classified as Foil. Thickness from 0.15 mm to 6.35 mm is a Sheet. Thickness greater than 6.35 mm is a Plate. A Coil is a long rolled sheet or strip wound into cylindrical form. All forms are available in both Hot Rolled (HR) and Cold Rolled (CR) condition.

How does Cu-Ni 70/30 compare to Cu-Ni 90/10?

Cu-Ni 70/30 (C71500) offers higher nickel content, which translates to greater corrosion resistance in seawater — particularly at high flow velocities (up to 4.5 m/s) and in polluted or aggressive marine environments. It also has superior tensile strength and is better suited to higher-temperature and higher-pressure applications than Cu-Ni 90/10 (C70600).

What industries use Copper Nickel 70/30 Plates?

Cu-Ni 70/30 Plates are widely used in marine and offshore engineering, desalination plants, heat exchangers and condensers, oil & gas processing, seawater cooling systems, boiler feed-water equipment, chemical processing, ship hulls and sea chests, pump bodies, propeller sleeves, and power generation.

What surface finishes are available for Cu-Ni 70/30 Sheets?

Amardeep Steel supplies Cu-Ni 70/30 Sheets and Plates in 2B, 2D, BA (Bright Annealed), No.1, No.4, No.8, 8K (mirror), brushed, hairline, sandblasted, embossed, checkered, and glossy finishes to suit various industrial requirements.

Do you supply custom-cut Cu-Ni 70/30 Plates and Tubesheets?

Yes. Amardeep Steel offers custom-cut Cu-Ni 70/30 Plates, Sheets, Discs, Circles, and Tubesheets as per customer specifications. Value-added services include waterjet cutting, plasma cutting, laser cutting, edging, deburring, grinding, and bending. We can also supply plates in compliance with NACE MR0175 for sour service environments.
