What Are Boiler Pipes?

Boiler pipes are seamless or welded steel pipes designed to convey steam, hot water, or hot gases under elevated temperature and pressure conditions. Unlike standard structural or fluid-service pipe, boiler pipe material must meet strict mechanical property minimums — tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and creep resistance — that are verified by mandatory testing at the mill and on delivery.

Boiler pipes are primarily used in:

Seamless Boiler Pipe vs Welded Boiler Pipe

Most boiler pipe specifications mandate seamless manufacture for pressure-retaining service. Here is why:

Characteristic Seamless Boiler Pipe ERW / Welded Boiler Pipe
Pressure rating Higher — no weld seam weakness Lower — weld seam is the weakest point
Temperature suitability Up to 650°C+ (alloy grades) Typically limited to lower temps
Standards ASTM A106, A179, A192, A213, A335 ASTM A53, API 5L
IBR approval Required for all IBR-registered boilers Generally not accepted for IBR service
Cost Higher Lower
Preferred use Boiler drums, superheaters, main steam Low-pressure utility piping only

Amardeep Steel Centre supplies exclusively seamless boiler pipes for all high-pressure and IBR applications. ERW pipe is only quoted for low-pressure utility service where confirmed acceptable by the end-user specification.

Types of Boiler Pipes We Supply

Related Boiler Products

Boiler pipes and boiler tubes are different products. Boiler pipes (ASTM A106, A335) are typically larger-diameter items used for steam headers and main pipework. Boiler tubes (ASTM A179, A192, A213) are small-bore seamless tubes used inside the boiler for heat transfer. We supply both — see links above.

Frequently Asked Questions — Boiler Tubes

What is a boiler pipe?

A boiler pipe is a seamless steel pipe designed to carry steam, hot water, or hot gas under elevated pressure and temperature conditions inside a boiler system. Boiler pipes must meet strict mechanical property requirements — tensile strength, yield strength, creep resistance, and impact toughness — tested and certified at the mill. The most common boiler pipe specifications are ASTM A106 (carbon steel), ASTM A335 (alloy steel for high-temperature service), and ASTM A213 (alloy steel tubes for superheater and reheater circuits).

What is seamless boiler pipe?

Seamless boiler pipe is manufactured without a longitudinal weld seam, using either hot rolling or cold drawing processes. The absence of a weld line means there is no weakest point in the pipe wall — making seamless construction the standard for all pressure-retaining boiler pipe applications. Under IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations) and most international standards, seamless pipe is mandatory for boiler drum and superheater piping service.

What are the standard boiler pipe specifications?

The most widely used boiler pipe specifications are: ASTM A106 Gr. B (seamless carbon steel, up to 480°C); ASTM A179 (seamless cold-drawn CS, heat exchangers); ASTM A192 (high-pressure seamless CS boiler pipe); ASTM A335 P11/P22/P91 (alloy steel for high-temperature steam piping); ASTM A213 T11/T22/T91 (alloy steel superheater tubes); and BS 3059 Part II (UK standard for boiler steel tubes). IBR-certified versions of all ASTM grades are available from Amardeep Steel Centre.

What is boiler pipe material?

Boiler pipe material is selected based on operating temperature and pressure. For temperatures up to 480°C, carbon steel grades (ASTM A106 Gr. B, A192) are used. For 480–649°C, low-alloy Cr-Mo grades (A335 P11, P22; A213 T11, T22) are specified. For 649°C and above — supercritical and ultra-supercritical service — Grade P91 or T91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) is the standard material. Stainless steel grades (TP304H, TP321H) are used where corrosion resistance is the primary concern alongside temperature.

What is the difference between boiler pipe and boiler tube?

Boiler pipes are larger-diameter seamless items (½" to 24" NB) used for steam headers, main pipework, and distribution systems — governed by ASTM A106 and A335. Boiler tubes are small-bore seamless items (typically under 2" OD) used inside the boiler for heat transfer — the actual tubing that water or steam flows through within the boiler pressure vessel — governed by ASTM A179, A192, A210, and A213. Both are manufactured to strict pressure ratings but serve distinct functions in the boiler system.

Do you supply IBR-approved boiler pipes?

Yes. Amardeep Steel Centre supplies IBR-certified seamless boiler pipes with Indian Boiler Regulation Form III B for all applicable grades. IBR certification is mandatory for all boiler pressure parts used in Indian-registered boilers. Contact our sales team with your IBR registration number and we will ensure full certification compliance is in place before despatch.

What countries do you export boiler pipes to?

We export seamless boiler pipes to 100+ countries across the Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain), Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand), Europe (UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain), Africa (Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Algeria), and the Americas (USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico). Full export documentation is provided including EN 10204 3.1B MTCs, COO, packing lists, and MSDS.
