25CrMo4 pipes and tubes are chromium-molybdenum steel products with material number 1.7218, used for highly stressed mechanical components and pressure applications. Amardeep Steel supplies 25CrMo4 pipes and tubes for applications requiring strength and heat treatment capability. The grade is comparable to our AISI 4130 tubing, with similar chromium-molybdenum alloying and different carbon limits. Compared with 4140 alloy tubing, 25CrMo4 generally has lower hardenability and is selected according to the required section size and mechanical properties. Our range of alloy steel pipes and tubes includes other chrome moly grades for demanding industrial applications.
Every order includes mill test certificates, heat treatment records and complete heat traceability.
What Are 25CrMo4 Pipes and Tubes?
25CrMo4 is a low alloy steel with about 1 percent chromium and a small addition of molybdenum. For tubes it is covered by EN 10297-1, the standard for seamless tubes for mechanical and general engineering use, and by EN 10216-2 for seamless pressure tubes at elevated temperatures.
The grade responds well to quenching and tempering, which lets it reach high strength while keeping good toughness. Its moderate carbon content also keeps it weldable with suitable preheat, which is not always true of higher carbon chrome moly grades.
Why Chromium and Molybdenum Matter
Chromium increases hardenability, so the steel hardens deeper into the wall when quenched. Molybdenum adds strength, helps the steel hold that strength at higher temperatures and reduces the risk of temper embrittlement. Together they give a tube that is strong, tough and stable in service.

25CrMo4 Mechanical Properties
In the quenched and tempered condition, strength depends on wall thickness because thinner walls cool faster and harden more fully.
Wall Thickness (T) | Yield Strength, min | Tensile Strength, min | Elongation, min |
|---|---|---|---|
Up to 8 mm | 700 MPa | 900 MPa | 12% |
Over 8 mm up to 20 mm | 600 MPa | 800 MPa | 14% |
Over 20 mm up to 50 mm | 450 MPa | 700 MPa | 15% |
25CrMo4 in the Annealed Condition
Annealed tubes are softer and easier to machine or form. Buyers who plan their own hardening after machining usually order the annealed condition and heat treat the finished part.
25CrMo4 Equivalent Grades
Standard | Equivalent Designation |
|---|---|
EN / DIN | 25CrMo4 (1.7218) |
AISI / SAE | 4130 (close match) |
UNS | G41300 (close match) |
JIS | SCM430 (close match) |
AFNOR | 25CD4 |
4130 has a slightly higher carbon range, so the two are close matches rather than exact equals. See our ASTM A519 Grade 4130 tubing for the ASTM version.

Chromium | 0.90 to 1.20% | 0.80 to 1.10% | 0.90 to 1.20% |
Molybdenum | 0.15 to 0.30% | 0.15 to 0.25% | 0.15 to 0.30% |
Weldability | Good with preheat | Good with preheat | Needs careful control |
Typical Use | Pressure and mechanical tubes | Structural and aircraft tubing | Shafts and highly loaded parts |
When you need more hardenability for thick sections, look at 42CrMo4 alloy steel.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 25CrMo4 material?
25CrMo4 is a chromium molybdenum low alloy steel with material number 1.7218. It contains 0.22 to 0.29 percent carbon, 0.90 to 1.20 percent chromium and 0.15 to 0.30 percent molybdenum, and is used in quenched and tempered or annealed condition.
What is the equivalent of 25CrMo4?
The closest equivalent of 25CrMo4 is AISI 4130 (UNS G41300). JIS SCM430 and AFNOR 25CD4 are also close matches. 4130 has a slightly higher carbon range, so check the project specification before substituting.
Which standard covers 25CrMo4 tubes?
25CrMo4 seamless tubes for mechanical and general engineering use are covered by EN 10297-1. Seamless pressure tubes for elevated temperature service in this grade are covered by EN 10216-2.
Is 25CrMo4 weldable?
Yes, 25CrMo4 can be welded, and its moderate carbon content makes it easier to weld than higher carbon grades such as 42CrMo4. Preheating and controlled cooling are normally used to avoid cracking.
