UNS S32101 Welded Pipes & Tubes

UNS S32101 Welded Pipes & Tubes

When higher strength is needed without a high nickel alloy, UNS S32101 welded pipes and tubes are a practical lean duplex option. Grade 2101, also known as EN 1.4162, keeps nickel at 1.35% to 1.70% by using manganese and nitrogen to replace much of the nickel in its chemistry. The result is a duplex grade with more than twice the yield strength of 304L, which can help reduce wall thickness in suitable piping applications. Amardeep Steel supplies UNS S32101 welded pipes and tubes to ASTM A789, A790 and A928. Compare the grade with our SS 304L pipes and tubes and UNS S32304 welded pipes and tubes, or explore our range of duplex steel pipes and tubes. Every order includes an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate and full heat traceability.

What Are UNS S32101 Welded Pipes and Tubes?

S32101 is a lean duplex stainless steel with 21% to 22% chromium, 4% to 6% manganese and 0.20% to 0.25% nitrogen. Its pitting resistance sits above 304L and close to 316L, and its duplex structure resists chloride stress corrosion cracking far better than austenitic grades. Service is generally kept below about 300°C.

Welding S32101

The high nitrogen in S32101 helps the weld and heat affected zone form austenite as they cool, which keeps toughness and corrosion resistance in the seam. Welded tube and pipe are solution annealed after welding as ASTM A789 and A790 require. Large bores are made as EFW pipe with filler to ASTM A928.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is UNS S32101?

UNS S32101 (Duplex 2101, EN 1.4162) is a lean duplex stainless steel with 21% to 22% chromium, 1.35% to 1.70% nickel, 4% to 6% manganese and 0.20% to 0.25% nitrogen.

Why does S32101 have different strength values by wall thickness?

ASTM A790 sets higher minimums for S32101 with wall up to 0.187 in (700 MPa tensile, 530 MPa yield) than for heavier wall (650 MPa tensile, 450 MPa yield).

Can S32101 replace 304L?

In many water, tank and structural uses, yes. S32101 has better pitting resistance than 304L, much better chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance and more than twice the yield strength.

Which standards cover S32101 welded pipe?

ASTM A790 covers welded pipe, ASTM A789 covers welded tube, and ASTM A928 covers electric fusion welded pipe. EN 10217-7 covers 1.4162 welded tube.

Is S32101 magnetic?

Yes. Its ferrite phase makes S32101 magnetic, as with other duplex grades.
