Stainless Steel 442 Welded Pipes & Tubes

Stainless Steel 442 Welded Pipes & Tubes

Welded pipes and tubes made from Stainless Steel 442 (UNS S44200) do not contain nickel. The ferritic grade consists of 18% - 23% of chromium, which allows for high-temperature operations with good resistance to scaling. The material is more capable in dealing with flue gases compared to 430 due to its additional chromium content. The welded form is useful for ducting, exhaust lines and furnace components where longer lengths and thinner walls are preferred. Amardeep Steel supplies SS 442 welded pipes and tubes with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and full heat traceability. For heavier wall or pressure service, see our SS 442 seamless pipes and tubes, or browse all SS welded pipes and tubes.

What Are Stainless Steel 442 Welded Pipes and Tubes?

Welded 442 tube is formed from 442 strip and joined along a longitudinal seam by ERW or TIG welding. The weld bead is trimmed and the tube is annealed. Like other high chromium ferritic grades, 442 has limited toughness at low temperature and coarse grains in the heat affected zone, so it is used for heat and scaling duty, not for impact or cryogenic service.

Supply Standards for Welded 442 Tube

Grade 442 is not one of the grades listed in ASTM A268. In India, welded 442 tube is covered by IS 17876, and plate and strip by ASTM A176. Welded 442 tube is produced to IS 17876 or to the purchase specification, using ASTM A268 general requirements where the buyer names them. Confirm the governing standard with your enquiry.

SS 442 Mechanical Properties

Because 442 is not an ASTM A268 grade, minimum tensile, yield and elongation values come from IS 17876 or the purchase specification and are stated on the mill certificate. In the annealed condition 442 has a higher tensile strength than 430, in line with its higher chromium content.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Stainless Steel 442 welded tube?

It is tube made from 442 strip (UNS S44200), a ferritic stainless steel with 18% to 23% chromium, joined along a longitudinal ERW or TIG weld and annealed.

Which standard covers SS 442 welded tube?

Grade 442 is not listed in ASTM A268. In India, welded 442 tube is covered by IS 17876. Otherwise it is supplied to the purchase specification.

What is the difference between SS 430 and SS 442?

SS 442 has 18% to 23% chromium against 16% to 18% in 430, which gives better scaling resistance in hot air and furnace gases.

Should I choose welded or seamless 442 tube?

Welded 442 suits thin wall ducting, exhaust and furnace parts. Seamless 442 is preferred for heavy wall and pressure duty.

Is SS 442 magnetic?

Yes. SS 442 is a ferritic stainless steel and is magnetic.
