ST52.3 pipes and tubes are used where a combination of strength, dimensional accuracy and machinability is needed, particularly in hydraulic cylinders, machine parts and structural frames. Amardeep Steel supplies them in seamless and welded form. The grade is identified by material number 1.0570 and has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for wall thicknesses up to 16 mm. It should not be confused with the St52 used in our DIN 2391 ST52 pipes and tubes. For applications based on current European standards, buyers can also consider our EN 10305-1 E355 tubes. Other grades are available in our precision tubes. Mill test certificates and dimensional records accompany every order.
What Are ST52.3 Pipes and Tubes?
St 52-3 comes from the old German structural steel standard DIN 17100. In tube form it is supplied as seamless precision tube to DIN 2391 and as welded precision tube to DIN 2393, and it is the grade most widely used for hydraulic cylinder barrels. Both DIN tube standards have been replaced by EN 10305-1 and EN 10305-2, where the matching strength level is E355.
ST52.3 and St52: Not the Same Grade
St52 in DIN 2391 is material 1.0580. St 52-3 is material 1.0570, the impact tested quality of DIN 17100 that corresponds to S355J2 in EN 10025-2. The two reach the same strength, but St 52-3 carries a notch toughness requirement, which is why many cylinder and frame drawings call for it by name.

ST52.3 Chemical Composition
Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
Carbon (C) | 0.20 max |
Silicon (Si) | 0.55 max |
Manganese (Mn) | 1.60 max |
Phosphorus (P) | 0.035 max |
Sulfur (S) | 0.035 max |
The low carbon content and manganese strengthening keep ST52.3 easy to weld, which matters when cylinder tubes are welded to end caps and mounting lugs.
ST52.3 Mechanical Properties
Wall Thickness | Yield Strength, min | Tensile Strength | Elongation, min |
|---|---|---|---|
Up to 16 mm | 355 MPa | 490 to 630 MPa | 22% |
Over 16 mm up to 40 mm | 345 MPa | 490 to 630 MPa | 22% |
Choosing the Delivery Condition
Hard drawn (BK) tube gives the highest strength but little ductility. Stress relieved (BKS) tube keeps most of that strength and stays stable during machining, which makes it the common choice for honed cylinder barrels. Normalized (NBK) tube gives the values in the table above and suits parts that are bent or welded.

ST52 vs ST52.3 vs E355
Property | ST52 (DIN 2391) | ST52.3 | E355 (EN 10305) |

Standard Status | Withdrawn | Withdrawn | Current |
If the drawing only asks for 355 MPa, EN 10305-1 E355 tubes or DIN 2391 ST52 tubes will usually do. Choose ST52.3 when the drawing names it or asks for impact tested material.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ST52.3 material?
ST52.3, also written St 52-3, is a carbon manganese structural steel with material number 1.0570. In tube form it has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa on walls up to 16 mm and a tensile strength of 490 to 630 MPa.
Is ST52.3 the same as S355J2?
S355J2 in EN 10025-2 is the closest current equivalent of St 52-3. For precision tubes the matching EN strength level is E355 in EN 10305-1 and EN 10305-2.
What is the difference between ST52 and ST52.3?
ST52 in DIN 2391 is material 1.0580 and ST52.3 is material 1.0570. Both reach 355 MPa yield, but ST52.3 comes from the impact tested structural quality, so it carries a notch toughness requirement.
Is ST52.3 tube used for hydraulic cylinders?
Yes. ST52.3 is one of the most widely used grades for hydraulic cylinder barrels, usually supplied stress relieved and then honed or skived and roller burnished.
