ASTM A672 CA65 EFW pipe is a designation buyers commonly use for 65 ksi electric fusion welded pipe made to ASTM A672. Amardeep Steel supplies this strength level in Grade B65, manufactured from A515 Grade 65 plate, and Grade C65, made from A516 Grade 65 plate. Buyers can refer to our ASTM A672 CB65 pipes for the relevant grade details, or compare the available strength levels through our ASTM A672 C60, C65 and C70 pipes. The complete ASTM A672 EFW pipe range covers other grades as well. Every order includes plate and weld certificates, radiography reports for the specified class and full heat traceability.
What Is ASTM A672 CA65 EFW Pipe?
ASTM A672 covers electric fusion welded steel pipe, made from pressure vessel plate with a filler metal weld, for high pressure service at moderate temperatures. The grade name tells you the plate: the letter is the plate family and the number is its minimum tensile strength in ksi.
What "CA65" Means in an A672 Order
A285 plate, which gives the A672 "A" grades, tops out at 55 ksi with Grade C, so there is no A285 plate at 65 ksi. A 65 ksi order is met with B65 from A515 plate or C65 from A516 plate. In ASTM A671 the same plates are called CB65 and CC65. Tell us which plate your drawing names, or we will advise.

ASTM A672 CA65 EFW Pipe Mechanical Properties
Property | B65 | C65 |
|---|---|---|
Plate | A515 Grade 65 | A516 Grade 65 |
Tensile Strength | 450 to 585 MPa (65 to 85 ksi) | 450 to 585 MPa (65 to 85 ksi) |

B65 or C65: Which One to Order
Both reach 450 to 585 MPa tensile and 240 MPa yield. B65 uses coarse grain A515 plate for intermediate and higher temperatures. C65 uses fine grain A516 plate, preferred where notch toughness at lower temperatures matters.
A672 Pipe Classes Explained
Class (first digit) | Heat Treatment on Pipe | Class (second digit) | Weld Radiography and Pressure Test |
|---|---|---|---|
1x | None | x0 | Neither |
2x | Stress relieved | x1 | Radiography only |
3x | Normalized | x2 | Radiography and pressure test |
4x | Normalized and tempered | x3 | Pressure test only |
5x | Quenched and tempered |
Classes ending in 2 include full radiography and a hydrostatic test, which lets designers use a weld joint factor of 1.0 under ASME B31.3.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ASTM A672 CA65 pipe?
ASTM A672 CA65 is the name commonly used for 65 ksi electric fusion welded pipe under ASTM A672. The specification supplies it as Grade B65 (A515 Grade 65 plate) or Grade C65 (A516 Grade 65 plate), both with a tensile strength of 450 to 585 MPa.
Why is CA65 supplied as B65 or C65?
A285 plate, used for the A672 "A" grades, stops at 55 ksi. The 65 ksi level in A672 comes from A515 or A516 plate, which gives Grades B65 and C65.
What is the yield strength of A672 CA65 pipe?
Both B65 and C65 have a minimum yield strength of 240 MPa (35 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 to 585 MPa.
Which is better for low temperature, B65 or C65?
C65, because it is made from fine grain A516 plate with better notch toughness at lower temperatures. B65 from A515 plate is intended for intermediate and higher temperatures.
