ASTM A672 A55 EFW pipe is manufactured from ASTM A285 Grade C plate and is intended for high pressure service at moderate temperatures. Amardeep Steel supplies this grade for applications where fabricated EFW pipe is required under the ASTM A672 specification. Buyers may also see enquiries written as “A672 CA55”; CA55 is the A671 designation for pipe made from the same plate grade. For higher strength requirements, see our ASTM A672 C60, C65 and C70 pipes. You can also explore the complete ASTM A672 EFW pipe range and our LSAW pipes and tubes. Every order includes plate and weld certificates, radiography reports and full heat traceability.
What Is ASTM A672 A55 EFW Pipe?
ASTM A672 covers electric fusion welded steel pipe, made from pressure vessel plate with a filler metal weld, for high pressure service at moderate temperatures. Grade A55 uses ASTM A285 Grade C, a plain carbon steel plate with a minimum tensile strength of 380 MPa. It is the strongest of the three A285 based grades, A45, A50 and A55.
A672 A55 and CA55: Same Plate, Two Specifications
A672 grade names use a letter for the plate family and a number for the tensile level, so A285 Grade C pipe is A55. ASTM A671, the specification for atmospheric and lower temperatures, adds a "C" prefix and calls the same plate CA55. "A672 CA55" mixes the two. Order A672 A55 for moderate temperature pressure service and A671 CA55 for atmospheric and low temperature service.

A672 Pipe Classes Explained
Class (first digit) | Heat Treatment on Pipe | Class (second digit) | Weld Radiography and Pressure Test |
|---|---|---|---|
1x | None | x0 | Neither |
2x | Stress relieved | x1 | Radiography only |
3x | Normalized | x2 | Radiography and pressure test |
4x | Normalized and tempered | x3 | Pressure test only |
5x | Quenched and tempered |
Classes ending in 2 include full radiography and a hydrostatic test, which lets designers use a weld joint factor of 1.0 under ASME B31.3. Class 12 and Class 22 are common for A55.
ASTM A672 A55 vs B60 vs C60
Property | A55 | B60 | C60 |
|---|---|---|---|
Plate | A285 Grade C | A515 Grade 60 | A516 Grade 60 |
Tensile Strength | 380 to 515 MPa | 415 to 550 MPa | 415 to 550 MPa |
Yield Strength, min | 205 MPa | 220 MPa | 220 MPa |
When the design needs more strength or toughness, A672 C60 pipe from fine grain A516 plate is the usual step up.
Heat Treatment of A672 A55 Pipe
- Post weld heat treatment: 590 to 680 degrees Celsius (1100 to 1250 degrees Fahrenheit)
- Normalizing: 925 degrees Celsius (1700 degrees Fahrenheit) maximum
Applications of ASTM A672 A55 Pipe
- Water transmission and cooling water mains

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ASTM A672 A55 pipe?
ASTM A672 A55 is electric fusion welded pipe made from ASTM A285 Grade C plate for high pressure service at moderate temperatures. It has a tensile strength of 380 to 515 MPa and a minimum yield of 205 MPa.
Is A672 CA55 the same as A672 A55?
A672 names this grade A55. CA55 is the ASTM A671 name for pipe made from the same A285 Grade C plate. "A672 CA55" mixes the two names; order A672 A55 for moderate temperature pressure service.
Is there an ASTM A672 CA60 or A60 grade?
No. A672 grades from A285 plate stop at A55, because A285 Grade C is the strongest A285 plate. For 60 ksi pipe, A672 offers B60 from A515 plate and C60 from A516 plate.
Can A672 A55 be used under ASME B31.3?
Yes. A672 A55 is a listed material for ASME B31.3 process piping. The weld joint factor depends on the class ordered.
