What is Stainless Steel 316L Pipe?
Stainless Steel 316L Pipe is the low-carbon variant of Grade 316 austenitic stainless steel - an alloy built around a chromium-nickel base with an added 2-3% molybdenum that significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments such as seawater, brine, and many acids. The "L" stands for "low carbon" (0.03% maximum versus 0.08% in standard 316). This single change has an outsized effect on fabrication: during welding, standard 316 can form chromium carbides at the grain boundaries, depleting chromium locally and leaving the heat-affected zone vulnerable to intergranular corrosion. The lower carbon content in SS 316L pipes largely prevents this, so welded 316L pipe does not normally need post-weld annealing to restore corrosion resistance.
Beyond weldability, SS 316L Pipe retains the core advantages of the 316 family: good strength and toughness across a wide temperature range including cryogenic service down to -196°C combined with the ductility (35% minimum elongation per ASTM A312 Table 3) needed for bending, forming and fabrication into pipe spools, fittings and pressure equipment.

ASTM A312 TP316L Pipe Overview
ASTM A312 is the primary specification covering seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service, with the mirror ASME specification SA312. Within this standard, TP316L (Type 316L) designates the low-carbon 316 chemistry. For tubular products, the equivalent tube specifications are ASTM A213 (seamless) and ASTM A249 (welded), both widely cross-referenced as “ASTM A312/A213/A249 TP316L.” Buyers sourcing 316L stainless steel pipes for process plant applications will frequently encounter this triple-standard reference on mill documents and purchase orders.

Chemical Composition of SS 316L Pipe (ASTM A312 Table 1)
| Grade | C (max) | Mn (max) | Si (max) | P (max) | S (max) | Cr | Ni | Mo | N (max) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 316L | 0.03% | 2.00% | 0.75% | 0.045% | 0.030% | 16.0–18.0% | 10.0–14.0% | 2.0–3.0% | 0.10% |
The defining feature of TP316L is its 0.03% maximum carbon content (versus 0.08% for standard 316), combined with 2–3% molybdenum — the element primarily responsible for SS 316L pipe’s resistance to pitting in chloride-bearing media such as seawater, saline process streams, and many dilute acids. This chemistry is verified by PMI (Positive Material Identification) using XRF or OES equipment on every lot dispatched from our facility to verify UNS S31603 chemistry, including the critical 0.03% carbon maximum.
Mechanical Properties of SS 316L Pipe (ASTM A312 Table 3)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (min) | 485 MPa (70,000 psi) per ASTM A312 Table 3 |
| Yield Strength 0.2% (min) | 170 MPa (25,000 psi) per ASTM A312 Table 3 |
| Elongation (min) | 35% (per ASTM A312 Table 3) |
| Hardness (max) | 217 HB / 95 HRB |
SS 316L pipe combines moderate strength with high ductility, allowing it to be bent, flared, and fabricated into pipe spools and fittings without cracking, while still meeting the minimum 485 MPa tensile strength required by ASTM A312 for pressure piping applications. These properties make 316L stainless steel pipes a reliable choice for both ambient and elevated-temperature service.

Seamless vs Welded SS 316L Pipe — Which to Choose?
| Factor | SS 316L Seamless Pipe | SS 316L Welded (ERW/EFW) Pipe |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Drawn from a solid billet, no weld seam | Formed from plate/strip with a longitudinal weld |
| Size Range | 1/2" – 16" NB | 1/2" – 100" NB |
| Pressure Rating | Generally higher for a given wall thickness | Slightly lower; compensated with thicker wall or higher schedule |
| Dimensional Accuracy | Tighter OD/WT tolerances | Wider tolerances, but improving with modern ERW/LSAW mills |
| Typical Use | High-pressure, critical, or hygienic process lines | Structural piping, large-diameter transport lines, low/medium-pressure corrosive service |
| Cost | Higher per kg | More economical, especially above 6" NB |
Guidance: For critical pressure piping, instrumentation, and hygienic process lines under 16" NB, SS 316L Seamless Pipe is typically specified. For structural applications, large-diameter pipelines, and general corrosive service, SS 316L Welded/EFW Pipe offers equivalent corrosion performance at a lower delivered cost — the weld is fully compatible with TP316L’s low-carbon chemistry, so post-weld annealing is generally not required.

TP316 vs TP316L — Key Differences
| Parameter | TP316 (Standard) | TP316L (Low Carbon) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Carbon Content | 0.08% | 0.03% |
| Carbide Precipitation on Welding | Higher risk | Minimal — generally no PWHT required |
| Intergranular Corrosion Resistance (welded) | Lower | Higher |
| Tensile / Yield Strength | Marginally higher | Marginally lower (485/170 MPa min per ASTM A312 Table 3) |
| High-Temperature Creep Strength | Better above ~500°C | Slightly lower at sustained high temperature |
| Best Suited For | Components requiring slightly higher strength/creep resistance, not heavily welded | Welded fabrications, chemical processing, pharma, food & beverage, marine piping |
In short: if a 316L pipe will be field-welded or used in a corrosive, chloride-rich environment, TP316L is the safer specification. If the application demands marginally higher sustained-temperature strength and welding is minimal, TP316 may be specified instead. Amardeep Steel Centre stocks both Stainless Steel 316 Pipes & Tubes and Stainless Steel 316L Pipes & Tubes — talk to our team if you’re unsure which grade your project requires.
Manufacturing Process of SS 316L Pipes & Tubes
- Melting & Casting: 316L chemistry is achieved via electric arc furnace melting with argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) refining to achieve the 0.03% maximum carbon specified in ASTM A312 TP316L, cast into billets/slabs.
- Hot Working: Billets are extruded or hot-rolled into hollow shells (seamless route) or hot/cold-rolled into strip/plate (welded route).
- Cold Drawing: Seamless tubes/pipes are cold-drawn over a mandrel to final dimensions for tighter tolerances and improved surface finish.
- Welding (ERW / EFW / LSAW): For welded pipe, strip or plate is roll-formed and longitudinally welded using TIG, MIG/MAG, plasma, or submerged-arc processes, depending on diameter and wall thickness.
- Heat Treatment: Annealing and quenching to restore the austenitic structure and relieve work-hardening from cold forming/welding.
- Pickling & Surface Finishing: Acid pickling removes scale; further finishing (bright annealing, mechanical polishing, electro-polishing) is applied per the required surface finish.
- Sizing, Cutting & End Finishing: Pipes are cut to single/double random or fixed lengths and end-finished (plain, beveled, threaded).
- Testing & Marking: Each lot undergoes chemical, mechanical, and dimensional testing before stenciling/marking and final packing.

Frequently Asked Questions - Stainless Steel 316L Pipes & Tubes
What is Stainless Steel 316L Pipe?
Stainless Steel 316L Pipe is a low-carbon (0.03% max) austenitic stainless steel pipe made from a chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy (UNS S31603), manufactured to ASTM A312 TP316L. The low carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding, giving it excellent resistance to intergranular and pitting corrosion.
What is the difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel pipe?
The main difference is carbon content: standard 316 allows up to 0.08% carbon, while 316L is limited to 0.03%. This makes 316L more resistant to corrosion after welding, with only a marginal reduction in tensile and yield strength compared to standard 316.
What is ASTM A312 TP316L?
ASTM A312 is the standard specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipe. TP316L (Type 316L) is the low-carbon 316 grade within that standard, equivalent to UNS S31603 and Werkstoff 1.4404/1.4435/1.4436.
What is the price of SS 316L pipe per kg?
SS 316L pipe price per kg depends on current nickel and molybdenum (LME) prices, pipe size, schedule, manufacturing type (seamless vs. welded), surface finish, and certification requirements. Because raw material prices change frequently, contact us for today’s price based on your specific requirement.
What sizes are available in SS 316L seamless and welded pipe?
SS 316L Seamless Pipe is available from 1/2" to 16" NB, SS 316L ERW/Welded Pipe from 1/2" to 24" NB, and SS 316L EFW/LSAW Pipe from 6" to 100" NB, across schedules 5S to XXS.
Is stainless steel 316L pipe magnetic?
In its standard austenitic (annealed) condition, SS 316L pipe is essentially non-magnetic or only very weakly magnetic. Cold working during manufacturing (such as drawing or bending) can introduce slight magnetism in localized areas due to partial transformation to martensite.
What is the maximum service temperature for SS 316L pipe?
SS 316L pipe can be used continuously up to 870°C (1600°F) and intermittently up to 925°C (1700°F) before scaling, and is also suitable for cryogenic service down to −196°C (−320°F).
What is the difference between seamless and welded 316L pipe?
Seamless 316L pipe is drawn from a solid billet with no weld seam, offering higher pressure ratings and tighter tolerances, typically used up to 16" NB.
