What is Stainless Steel 304L?
Stainless Steel 304L is the most widely used stainless steel for welded components. The "L" in its name stands for "Low Carbon," which is its defining and most critical feature. While chemically similar to standard Grade 304, the carbon content in a 304L ss pipe is restricted to a maximum of 0.03%.
This low carbon content prevents a phenomenon known as sensitization, or intergranular corrosion (weld decay). During the welding of standard 304, chromium carbides can form at the grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone, depleting chromium and making the area susceptible to corrosion. By limiting the carbon, SS 304L Pipes can be welded without this risk, ensuring the corrosion resistance of the weld joint is as strong as the base metal itself. This makes the ss 304L pipe the default choice for any application requiring welding.
