Stainless Steel Grade 904L is an austeniticnon-stabilized stainless steel with low carbon in its composition. Copper is added to the alloy to improve its resistance to strong reducing acids, such as sulphuric acid.

The alloy also contains a good amount of expensive ingredients, such as nickel and molybdenum.

On the other hand, Grade 310, possess excellent high temperature properties with a good measure of ductility and weldability.The alloy 310L (and proprietary versions of this grade), is a 0.03% maximum carbon version of 310 Grade Steel.

Corrosion:

904L stainless steels possess excellent resistance to warm seawater and also from chloride attack. The high resistance in grade 904L against stress corrosion cracking is due to the presence of high amounts of nickel. The alloy is less resistant to nitric acid than grades 304L and 310L. This steel grade needs to be solution treated following cold working, to achieve maximum stress corrosion cracking resistance under critical environments.

In 310L, high chromium content - intended to increase high temperature properties - also gives these grades good aqueous corrosion resistance. 310L possess excellent resistance at normal temperatures, and in high temperature service exhibits good resistance to oxidising and carburising atmospheres.

Heat Resistance:

The structural stability of this Grade 904L Stainless Steel collapses at high temperatures, particularly above 400°C.

Grade 310 is generally used at temperatures starting from about 800 or 900°C.

Welding:

Grade 904L stainless steels does not require pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments. The alloy can be exposed to hot cracking in constrained weldment. It can be welded using all standard methods.

Grade 310Lcan be welded using all standard methods. Grade 310S electrodes generally recommended for fusion welding.

Applications:

Some of the major applications of grade 904L stainless steels include Wiring of electrostatic precipitators, Oil and gas refinery components, cooling devices, Gas scrubbing factories, Paper Processing industries, Phosphoric and sulphuric acid processing plants.

Typical applications of 310L include Heat Exchangers, Oil Burner parts, Carburising boxes, Heat Treatment baskets and jigs, welding filler wire and electrodes, Furnace parts.
