Alloy 904L (UNS N08904) is a super austenitic stainless steel that is designed for moderate to high corrosion resistance in a wide range of process environments. The combination of high chromium and nickel content, coupled with additions of molybdenum and copper, assure good to excellent corrosion resistance. With its highly alloyed chemistry — 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum, 904L provides good chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance, pitting and general corrosion resistance superior to 316L and 317L molybdenum enhanced stainless steels. Alloy 904L was originally developed to withstand environments containing dilute sulfuric acid.
It also offers good resistance to other inorganic acids such as hot phosphoric acid as well as most organic acids. Stainless Steel 904L is easily welded and processed by standard shop fabrication practices. The high nickel and chromium content of these Stainless Steel 904L plates make it corrosion resistant is both oxidizing and reducing environments. SS 904L Plates are intended for use under severe corrosion conditions within the process industry. Stainless Steel 904L Plates is also used in utility scrubber assemblies, acid and fertilizer production equipment. Alloy 904L Coils was originally developed to withstand environments containing dilute sulfuric acid, and is one of the few stainless steels that, at temperatures up to 95 Degree F (35 Degree C), provides full resistance in such environments within the entire concentration range.

904L stainless steels possess excellent resistance to warm seawater and also from chloride attack. The above the normal resistance in grade 904L against stress corrosion cracking is due to the presence of high amounts of nickel. The alloy is less resistant to nitric acid than grades 304L and 310L.
Grade 904L stainless steels also have excellent weldability which can be performed using all conventional methods. This steel does not require pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments.
The steel structure collapses only at a temperature above 400 C. This grade of SS Plates gives the best oxidation resistance and has the structural stability which usually collapses at high temperatures like 400°C and above.
